روش تجزیه‌وتحلیل حالات شکست، جهت شناسایی و حذف مشکلات محتمل در طرح محصول و فرآیند تولید استفاده می­شود. این روش به­عنوان یک ابزار قدرتمند برای ایمنی و قابلیت اطمینان گسترش­یافته و در طیف گسترده­ای از صنایع ازجمله صنعت دریایی مورداستفاده قرارگرفته است. اما نقصان‌هایی مانند در نظر نگرفتن روابط مستقیم و غیرمستقیم بین خطاها و عدم توانایی در تحلیل خرابی با علت­های مشترک و افتراق بین مخاطرات با عدد اولویت یکسان در روش مبتنی بر محاسبه عدد اولویت مخاطره (RPN) مشهود است. با توجه به اهمیت ایمنی در صنعت دریایی، در این مقاله به‌کارگیری روش بهبودیافته‌ای با ادغام روش­های تاپسیس و دیمتل برای اولویت­بندی مخاطرات در صنعت دریایی شرح داده می‌شود که پیاده­سازی آن منجر به حل مشکلات معمول روش RPN ازجمله کاهش تکرار مقادیر RPN، شناسایی و تحلیل روابط بین اجزای سامانه، رتبه‌بندی مطلوب­تر مخاطره به­منظور یافتن بحرانی‌ترین علل خرابی و بهبود جدی­ترین مخاطرات تحت منابع محدود گردیده است.
