گلایدرهای زیرسطحی، گونه­ای از وسایل خودمختار هستند که نقش ویژه‌ای در مطالعات اقیانوس شناسی ایفا می‌کنند. این مطالعات نیاز به پایش‌های مداوم و طولانی مدت دارند که گلایدرها به دلیل مصرف پایین انرژی و مداومت بالا، برای انجام این ماموریت‌ها محبوبیت یافته­اند. در این میان، دسته­ای از گلایدرها قابلیت بهره­برداری از انرژی حرارتی نهفته در لایه­های آب را دارند که موجب افزایش مداومت چشمگیر آن­ها شده است. این شناورها نیاز به غوص در اعماق بالای 680 متر دارند و در مناطق با عمق­های کمتر قابلیت پیمایش خود را از دست می­دهند. در این مقاله ضمن تحلیل سیستم پیشران یک نمونه شناور موجود، زمان انتقال حرارت و عمق کاربری آن مورد ارزیابی قرار می­گیرد و به منظور استفاده در آب­های کم عمق­تر، رهیافتی ارائه می­گردد تا بتوان از این فناوری در مناطق وسیع­تری از دریای عمان بهره­برداری نمود.
